Men's Health Q & A

What is men’s health?

Men experience a variety of chronic health problems, like diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, and heart disease. Men can also have nutritional problems, such as a vitamin or mineral deficiency, or issues with stress, alcohol, or tobacco use.

Eating healthy can also be a problem for some men, leading to obesity and high cholesterol levels, both of which contribute to cardiovascular disease, a leading killer of men. In fact, men with a waist that’s larger than 40 inches are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Dr. Haque can help men with weight loss through nutritional management and an exercise plan.

There are some conditions and health issues that relate to the male reproductive system, and certain men’s health problems stem from low levels of the male sex hormone testosterone.

What role does testosterone play in men’s health?

Testosterone is what gives you your male sex characteristics. It keeps your body muscular, gives you energy and drive, and is responsible for your interest in sex.

If levels of testosterone fall too low, you can lose muscle mass, feel fatigued, and suffer a loss of libido, as well as a range of other symptoms. Low testosterone is one of the causes of erectile dysfunction (ED) as well.

ED means you can’t achieve an erection when you wish to have sex, or you can’t sustain an erection for long enough. Experiencing this infrequently isn’t a cause for concern, but if you have ED regularly, it can severely affect your self-esteem and quality of life.

Dr. Haque can take a blood sample to test your hormone levels and prescribe supplemental testosterone if you need it.

What other men’s health problems are there?

A common health problem affecting men is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The prostate is a gland located under your bladder. It surrounds the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from your bladder down through your penis when you urinate.

BPH is an enlargement of the prostate that puts pressure on the urethra and can cause problems with urination. This condition is more common than prostate cancer but can cause similar symptoms, which include urinary frequency, dribbling, or pain during urination. Therefore you should always see Dr. Haque for a diagnosis if you have any of these symptoms.

Prostate cancer is another condition that affects many men, although in most cases it develops quite slowly. Less common forms of prostate cancer are more aggressive and spread quickly, so you shouldn’t take any chances if you have symptoms.

Dr. Haque can perform a prostate exam to check the size of your prostate. He can also examine your testicles for any sign of testicular cancer. Testicular cancer is quite rare, but as you only need to undergo a simple physical exam to check for lumps, it’s well worth having.
